Length of time at CCNB: 1 year
Reason corpsmember was selected: Sayda has shown great leadership skills. During the month of June, Sayda worked in the shop and learned to repair most of our power tools, many times working independently. She performed beyond my expectations by repairing tools, cleaning the shop, and organizing and performing many other tasks in our San Rafael building. Sayda has also help maintained our garden by performing various landscaping projects in our San Rafael building.
Skills training received at CCNB: Sawyer I and II , Shop operations I, II and III
Leadership roles at CCNB: Shop Operator
Favorite project: Shop
Favorite educational component: Sayda's favorite class is English. She likes to practice dialogues in class in English with her teacher and other students.
Favorite aspect of working at CCNB: Working outdoors, using the chainsaw.
Future plans: She would like to go back to Guatemala and if possible, start a program there similar to CCNB.
What did corpsmember do before joining CCNB?: Worked at home.
Why did corpsmember join CCNB?: She had seen people working and going out in the vans, so she went to the front office to ask about the program. She liked that they told her that she could work and go to school at the same time.
How has CCNB changed your life?: Sayda has learned many skills and better English. She has also become more responsible with her job.
What life lessons has the Corpsmember learned from the experience?: She learned that ladies can work just as hard as the guys.
Any advice for young people wanting to join CCNB?: If you join CCNB, take advantage of the classes and learn as much as you can of the different projects.
What's the most important thing you've learned from this experience?: To work more safe, to always think about protective equipment before starting work, and to protect our natural resources.
