Youth in Environmental Service – tomorrow's environmental leaders start here.

Through this program, CCNB has become one of the premiere brokers of environmental education and service opportunities for youth in the Bay Area. Corpmembers are serving as partners with Cesar Chavez Service Learning Program, College of Marin, Cool the Earth, and Marine Mammal Center. And we're growing fast.

The goals of the Youth Environmental Service (YES) are threefold.

  • Bring youth into the parks to help them develop an appreciation and commitment towards nature and our environment.
  • Creating rewarding development opportunities to ensure the success and commitment of YES members.
  • Strengthen inter-agency collaboration through team work projects. Corpsmembers build partnerships between Bay Area youth groups and schools from underserved areas as well as environmental agencies managing public lands.

Learning the value of teamwork

Corpsmembers are paired off into teams of two. Each team is assigned to a middle school or high school and given an environmental partner (a grassroots organization with a similar mission to get young people involved in environmental service).

During September through June, YES teams have roughly three youth focused service weeks and one restoration based service week per month.

An opportunity to lead

During the summer, YES corpsmembers serve as leaders in CCNB's Project Regeneration (ReGen) program. Members help young ReGen members facilitate community asset and needs assessments, implement environmental science curriculum and guiding members in community service projects.

The program consists of two four-week sessions with participants serving seven hour days. Trained YES members serve as the educators, team builders and liaisons to the project sponsors. Environmental service projects focused on restoring streams, marshes and hillsides are overseen by Site Supervisors.

Beach clean-ups, waste audits at various local non-profit organizations and recycling projects are just some of the projects completed through this program.
