Project ReGen – work on more than a tan this summer.
Each summer, CCNB operates two four-week Project ReGeneration sessions in Marin and Sonoma counties, which run from mid-June through mid-August. Sixth through ninth graders take part in the program Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 4:00pm.
The program's unique combination of environmental service, education, and outdoor recreation make it one of the North Bay's most sought after summer youth experiences.
Since its launch in 1999, Project ReGeneration program has helped more than 700 youth in gain strong work and environmental ethics, self-confidence, and leadership skills while having the best time of their lives.
The specific goals of Project ReGen include:
- Enhancing young people's lives, while improving local parklands and communities;
- Empowering youth with environmental knowledge, skills, and strong service/work ethics that are transferable to their homes, communities, and schools;
- Giving participants a deeper understanding of environmental issues with the goal of fostering the next generation of environmental stewards;
- Exposing youth to a variety of career opportunities and healthy forms of outdoor recreation;
- Giving ninth graders the opportunity to earn five units of Environmental Science elective credits that are transferable to their high school;
- Helping youth build the self-confidence and self-respect that ensures their future success;
- Creating an open, accepting environment where teens from a variety of cultural and economic backgrounds work together.
- Earning a Serve & Lean America scholarship of $500 upon completing 100 hours of service in the program that can be applied toward their higher education.
How we achieve our goals
- Put young teams under the mentorship of CCNB staff and resource management professionals to each complete approximately 100 service hours on habitat restoration, recycling, trail maintenance, and other environmental projects in the North Bay. Sites include Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Point Reyes National Seashore, Mount Tamalpais, and Sonoma County Park and Open Space Lands.
- Activities ranging from conducting residential energy and sustainability audits to touring local educational sites such as the Bay Model and the Natural History Museum, teach young people how to reduce their carbon footprint.
- Fun recreational interludes such as canoeing, hiking, and a youth challenge course instill an appreciation for the region's unique natural environment.
- Assign youth teams to design and implement their own community service projects to encourage critical thinking and teamwork, it also shows young people that they have the power to make a difference in their community.
On the program's last day—Summer Service Days—hundreds of youth, family, friends and community volunteers come together to complete the 14 youth-designed service projects in local communities and parklands. Nearly 400 community volunteers participate in CCNB's Summer Service Days projects every summer.
