Summer Service Days – serve and be served.

When: Friday, August 13, 2010, 9:00 am - 2:30 pm

Details: Get involved in environmental community projects designed and led by youth participating in CCNB's Project ReGeneration summer youth program. Afterwards, everyone is invited back to Pickleweed Park in San Rafael for a celebration barbeque. All ages welcome! Please bring one Volunteer Waiver [PDF] for the entire family.

Service Project Descriptions

Schedule for all projects:

9:00-12:30 pm  Service Projects 
12:30-1:00 pm  Clean-up and travel to picnic site at Pickleweed Park 
1:00 pm  Barbeque 
1:30–2:30 pm  Summer Service Days Celebration 

Please bring a reusable water container and wear sturdy clothing and shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty.


Team 1: Signs and Seeds

Maximum # of Attendees/Volunteers: 50

Task Exertion Levels: Light

Activities: Volunteers will help decorate and assemble seed packets to give away as gifts at the Canal Community Garden Celebration taking place on the on the day after Summer Service Days. Walkers attending the Celebration will tour the various gardens in the Canal. Volunteers at Summer Service Days will help decorate signs and make sidewalk art around the route of the Community Garden Tour. The sidewalk art will direct walkers where to go and encourage them to complete the tour.

Team 2: Garden Beautification

Maximum # of Attendees/Volunteers: 50

Task Exertion Levels: Light-Moderate

Activities: Team Two invites you to help weed the vegetable and herb gardens at Conservation Corps North Bay and the Canal Alliance in preparation for the Canal Community Garden Celebration. Walkers attending the Celebration on the day after Summer Service Days will tour the various gardens in the Canal including CCNB and Canal Alliance’s. Team Two will make sure the gardens are weed-free and ready to inspire the community to start their own gardens.

Team 3: Imagine a Community Garden

Maximum # of Attendees/Volunteers: 50

Task Exertion Levels: Light-Moderate

Activities: The Canal Community Garden is scheduled to begin construction later this fall. At Summer Service Days Team Three and volunteers will mulch paths on the site of the future Community Garden. When visitors tour the site at the Canal Community Garden Celebration the day after Summer Service Days, they will be able to imagine what the garden might look like in a few months.

Team 4: Bahia Vista Spruce Up

Maximum # of Attendees/Volunteers: 50

Task Exertion Levels: Light-moderate

Activities: Bahia Vista Elementary School will be one of the stops on the tour of gardens during the Canal Community Garden Celebration taking place the day after Summer Service Days. Team Four and volunteers will weed the gardens and perform general maintenance to have the garden looking its best for the Celebration.

Teams 5: Litter Leaders                                                                                       

Maximum # of Attendees/Volunteers: 50

Task Exertion Levels: Light

Activities: Team Five will pick up litter along the route of the walking tour that will take place during the Canal Community Garden Celebration the day after Summer Service Days. Volunteers and team members will beautify the Canal, make sure that trash stays away from storm drains and that recyclable waste is diverted from the landfill.

Team 6: Veggies for All

Maximum # of Attendees/Volunteers: 30

Task Exertion Levels: Light-Moderate

Activities: The apartment complex at 78 Novato St. is host to a few garden boxes, and will be one stop on the walking tour during the Canal Community Garden Celebration. The gardens need vegetables and weeding. Volunteers and team members will also pick up litter around the complex to get it ready for the Celebration taking place the day after Summer Service Days.
