Education Program – just the FAQs.

Is participation in the education program MANDATORY?

Yes. All corpsmembers, no matter what their previous educational experience, must want to take advantage of the opportunity to improve skills and gain qualifications.

What kinds of classes will I be taking?

It depends on the corpsmember's educational level and qualifications. Each corpsmember has an individual education plan designed to meet his or her goals.

Many corpsmembers will be studying:

  • High School Diploma credit classes
  • California High School Exit Examination (CAHSEE) Preparation
  • GED
  • English as a Second Language (if required)

Those who have already graduated from high school work toward personalized educational goals. Those include:

  • Leadership
  • Environmental ethics
  • Emergency response
  • CPR
  • Conflict management
  • Cross-cultural communication
  • Computer skills

The Corps-to-Career staff will provide help and guidance in:

  • Setting goals
  • Career development
  • Job search and retention
  • Resume writing and interviewing

Can I earn my high school diploma and/or GED?

Yes. CCNB is affiliated with the John Muir Charter School – an accredited high school for adults (18-25). Corpsmembers have the opportunity to take academic high school classes, gain credits, and finish the State of California graduation requirements.

How long will it take to earn my diploma?

It depends on how many credits you need and how hard you study. Credits are earned during the formal classes and through field experience performed during the week. Although the standard length of time a corpsmember stays is one year, corpsmembers are often allowed to stay longer if they need more time to finish the requirements.

What if I have had trouble in schools in the past?

CCNB is very successful with those who did not thrive in other school settings. The experienced credentialed teachers help each corpsmember set personal education and career goals. Classes are very small, and individual assistance is given.

What if I can't pass the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE)?

Even if you have not passed the CAHSEE yet, there is a good chance you will do so at CCNB. We have a teacher dedicated solely to helping corpsmembers gain the skills necessary for success in this exam. The individual attention from all our teachers allows for the targeted remediation that is often the key to achieving a passing score.

Are scholarships available?

Education awards are available through the AmeriCorps program for those who qualify. Corpsmembers can earn up to $4,725 for each award, with the possibility of earning a maximum of two awards toward further education in college or accredited vocational schools.
