Position: Natural Resources Manager

Job description: The Natural Resources Program Manager works closely with the Executive Director and Management Team, consisting of all Conservation Corps North Bay Managers and Directors, to establish Natural Resource Program departmental goals and to develop, implement, monitor and assess strategies to achieve the goals.  The Natural Resources Manager is responsible for all aspects of Natural Resources Program field projects including marketing, development, implementation and contractual relations with project sponsors. Additionally the Natural Resources Manager is responsible for the smooth running of the Natural Resources Program department and the professional development of the Natural Resources Program field staff.

Duties and responsibilities:

Specific Responsibilities Include, but are not limited to: 

Project Marketing, Development and Implementation: Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Natural Resources Program Manager:

  • Actively markets Conservation Corps North Bay's services to local, state and federal agencies by developing strong relationships with local land managers. 
  • Works closely with the Development Director to align grant opportunities with upcoming projects and coordinate grant writing.
  • Works closely with the Finance Director in developing appropriate departmental and project budgets.
  • Estimates and negotiates project contracts and agreements. 
  • Accurately assesses the cost in materials and labor for completing projects.
  • Tracks the costs of work in progress to ensure efficient completion in a fiscally responsible manner.
  • Ensures the safety, quality and timely completion of all field projects.
  • Tracks project results and completes progress reports for multiple funding sources and organizational updates.

Contractual Relations with Project Sponsors: Under the direction of the Executive Director and with the guidance of the Finance Director, the Natural Resources Program Manager:

  • Is responsible and responsive to sponsors concerns and needs on all natural resource projects.
  • Communicates accurately and completely the scope and sponsor expectations of all work projects to coordinators and crew supervisors. 
  • Visits projects in progress to ensure the quality of the work product delivered. 
  • Actively seeks evaluations from sponsors about work performed to ensure continuing improvement in Conservation Corps North Bay's work performance.
  • Inspects completed work for compliance with specifications, quality and quantity; and evaluates overall project success.

Natural Resources Program Department Management: The Natural Resources Program Manager works closely with the Executive Director and the Management Team to provide support, guidance and direction to Natural Resources Program department coordinators, crew supervisors and any other staff in the field operations area. The Natural Resources Program Manager is responsible for:

  • Supervision of natural resources field staff and corpsmembers including hiring, evaluation, disciplinary action and terminations.
  • Fostering a culture of hard work and integrity in the Natural Resources Program department.
  • Assuring that Natural Resources Prorgram staff and corpsmembers conduct themselves in a professional manner, especially when interfacing with the public, and adhere to all Conservation Corps North Bay rules and guidelines.
  • Assuring all department staff operate in compliance with labor and contract laws.
  • Creating and maintaining a safe work environment for all Natural Resources Program employees

Professional Development of Natural Resources Program Field Staff Personnel: The Natural Resources Program Manager works closely with the Human Resources Manager and the Education Department staff to provide training and professional development to the Natural Resources Program field staff personnel.

  • Actively plans, coordinates and develops programs and activities to enhance leadership and technical skills in both corpsmembers and field staff members including felling trees, building technical trail structures, disaster response, use of heavy equipment and more.
  • Provides training in conservation techniques, environmental topics, life skills, and youth development.
  • Ensures academic support is provided to all corpsmembers.

Desired qualifications:

The Natural Resources Program Manager has proven expertise in management, excellent logistical skills and the ability to work effectively with a diverse range of people in a fast paced environment. A strong background in natural resources management, carpentry, wildland fire management, trail construction, and/or restoration is needed. Experience working with land management agencies, backcountry/spike operations and/or youth programs preferred.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Organizational and time management skills, including prioritizing and completing multiple tasks.
  • Experience in training techniques and meeting facilitation.
  • Ability to develop and manage a $2.6 million annual budget. 
  • Ability and desire to network effectively with managers from a variety of government agencies to ensure that development goals are met. 
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to supervise, train and motivate others in their work.
  • Experience in completing natural resources projects and using the tools involved in natural resources work.
  • Clean driving record and ability to obtain a California Class B Driver's license.
  • Ability to obtain a C27 California Contractors License.
  • A Bachelor's degree in related field needed, Master's degree preferred.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit and talk or hear. The employee is required to walk; use hands to operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. Perform simple grasping and fine manipulation. There are normal office working conditions and associated physical demands. For example, on a continuous basis, sit at a desk using a computer and in meetings for long periods of time. Intermittently twist to reach equipment surrounding desk.

While on the grade the Natural Resources Program Manager works outdoors around equipment and machinery, walking on uneven ground and steep hillsides, with exposure to excessive noise, fumes and extremes in temperature. S/he may be expected to lift and move objects weighing up to 75 lbs, and carry objects at least ½ mile. The Natural Resources Program Manager frequently uses special visual and auditory protective equipment. While performing on the grade, the NRP Manager is required to walk and stand; sit and bend; squat and climb; kneel and twist; to talk or hear. The Natural Resources Program uses hands to operate objects, tools, or controls; and reaches with hands and arms. The Natural Resources Program uses hands to perform simple and power grasping, and fine manipulation; to push and pull.
